I am designing a circular sludge digester tank and have modelled the base of the walls as a sliding joint to avoid the large forces that would otherwise be induced due to the thermal effects on the wall. The tank is 21.2m diameter and will contain 21.2m height of sludge, therefore the walls are 600mm thick and the vertical load at the base of the wall is quite high. In addition the tank is supported on a raft slab which is subject to differential displacements which cause concentrations of load below the walls in certain areas. The maximum load (ULS) is approx 2.9N/mm2. Do you think that a Voss slide bearing, could perform this role? If it can do this, have you got any examples where this has been done and could you give me an idea of the relative coefficient of friction? Please note that this joint has to be waterproof also. Currently we are considering using an internal waterstop and a compressible filler/sealant on the outside of the wall.
